Why We Created Our Own Seamless Paper Line (and Matching Props to Go With It)
After the unexpected success of our Potato Belts and Fat Suits, we knew photographers were looking for tools and props that actually worked — not just in theory, but in real sessions, with real babies.
But while those first products were small and simple to ship, the next idea… not so much.
The Backdrop Dilemma
I (Amy) had collected a decent stash of seamless paper from another brand for my own studio — around 20 colors. Seamless backdrops had become a big part of my signature look. I loved a clean, monochromatic setup where everything from the paper to the props to the outfits felt cohesive.
But I was constantly frustrated.
The seamless paper I was using had:
- A pulpy texture that made post-processing more time-consuming
- A shiny finish that reflected light in weird ways
- And a limited color selection that just didn’t reflect the muted, modern tones my clients were asking for
So one day I said to Lindsey:
"Wouldn't it be cool if we could create our own seamless line in custom colors?"
Enter: The Newborn Nerds Seamless Paper Line
It was a very big idea — one that involved manufacturing, warehousing, shipping, and a whole bunch of logistics Lindsey did not want to deal with. 😅
But eventually, she let me talk her into it.
We spent months working behind the scenes to get the quality just right. We wanted a paper that was:
- Smooth and matte (so it photographs beautifully with minimal editing)
- Thick and durable, but not so heavy it’s a pain to work with
- And most importantly… available in modern, on-trend colors that photographers could actually use
It was a huge risk. It was expensive. It was a logistical headache.
And it was completely worth it.
Today, our seamless paper line is loved by thousands of photographers — and we’ve built it out to 61 (and counting!) custom colors. 🎨
Matching Props = Less Guesswork
Once we got the backdrop situation figured out, the next step was obvious:
Let’s make props that match.
We launched our signature Sweet Little Boxes — sturdy, perfectly proportioned wooden crates painted to match every seamless color we offer. Since then, we’ve added:
- Matching layers
- Coordinating outfits
- Coordinating Headbands
- Matching Bowls & Baskets
- And more color-matched props in the works
Because let’s be honest — nobody wants to chase down pieces from 5 different vendors and hope it all matches when it arrives. Our goal was to make The Newborn Nerds shop a one-stop solution where you can build an entire setup (newborn or sitter) in one color and know everything will coordinate beautifully.
Full Circle
What started as two photographers trying to make one pose a little easier has grown into a full-blown prop and backdrop brand trusted by photographers all over the world.
We never set out to create a product line. But now that we have?
We’re all in — and we're so grateful for every photographer who’s joined us on this nerdy little journey. 💛
